Australian Premiere of Paper Tiger to close Sydney Film Festival 2026

Sydney Film Festival will close its 73rd edition with the Australian Premiere of James Gray’s (The Immigrant, Ad Astra) celebrated Cannes Competition crime thriller Paper Tiger at the State Theatre on Sunday 14 June.

Fri 29 May 2026

An electrifying crime thriller

Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller star in Paper Tiger, a powerful and explosive crime thriller set in 1980s New York, that serves as both a portrait of a complex family and of a country undergoing a radical change in its value system.

“James Gray has made a meticulous, riveting film on the complexity of family dynamics in a challenging world, featuring tremendous performances. This closing night film is one that will leave a lasting impression and will conclude the festival on a high note.”
SFF Festival Director Nashen Moodley

The screening will mark the official Closing Night Gala and Award Ceremony for the 73rd Sydney Film Festival, where the winner of the $60,000 Sydney Film Prize will be revealed, alongside a slate of other major awards, totalling a $200,000 prize pool.
