Barbara Hammer: Was a Superdyke

Spanning the mid-1970s to early 1980s, these six films chart a formative period for Hammer as she develops a bold, distinctly lesbian avant-garde voice. Moving from erotic montage and communal ritual to portraits of lovers and friends, the works explore touch and connection through inventive formal approaches. At times sexually explicit and disorienting in their visual intensity, they challenge cinematic and social conventions. The closing film, Audience, captures viewer responses across multiple cities in a candid, sometimes flirty and always engaging snapshot of the era, inviting audiences to reflect on their own responses.
