This explosive documentary directed by Lucrecia Martel (Zama, SFF 2018) won Best Film at BFI London Film Festival. A gripping investigation into the killing of an Indigenous leader.

A shocking act of violence unfolds in rural Argentina when Javier Chocobar, leader of the Indigenous Chuschagasta community, is killed defending ancestral land from encroachment. The crime, captured on camera, becomes undeniable, yet justice is delayed for a decade as those responsible remain free. With a searching approach that delivers profound insight, legendary Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel (in her first ever documentary) reveals how this act of violence echoes centuries of dispossession, resistance and exploitation. Evoking the enduring connection between the people and the land, this documentary is one of the most important films of the year – with a message that will linger long after the credits roll.

Landmarks may be the director’s first work of non-fiction — and an impressive one at that — but it extends a major underlying theme of her previous movies, highlighting deep social fractures within Argentina that can never be fully mended.
