The Birthday Party

Nora (Herzi) lives with her husband Tom and daughter Ida on remote marshland. While Nora tries to progress in her work in town planning, Tom's money troubles on the farm are becoming more and more pressing. Still, it's Nora's birthday and Tom, along with Italian painter neighbour Cristina (Bellucci), plan an elegant celebration. When young Ida posts a video of the family on social media, her mother responds with irrational anger, but it will prove to be a moment of great importance and danger. With stunning imagery, director Léa Mysius (Ava, The Five Devils), one of French cinema's most promising talents, ratchets up the tension in this perfectly calibrated and acted edge-of-your-seat thriller.
